As public interest in the vacant Awujale throne continues to grow across Ijebuland, Ogun State, Nigeria and beyond, Prince Abimbola Onabanjo and his wife have attracted further attention through community development initiatives, including the provision and commissioning of five 500 KVA electricity transformers for communities in Ijebuland.
The commissioning ceremony, held on 17 October 2026 and witnessed by BoldNEWS Africa, forms part of a series of community-focused initiatives associated with the couple, including the recent provision of 52 boreholes and various empowerment programmes across Ijebuland.
Speaking on behalf of the couple, Mrs. Funmilayo Ayanwusi said the distribution of the transformers reflected their commitment to addressing pressing community needs and improving residents’ living conditions.
She noted that the intervention came at a significant time, as discussions surrounding the Awujale succession increasingly extended beyond royal lineage and traditional credentials to encompass public service, personal responsibility and a demonstrated commitment to the welfare of the people.
Chief Jasowo, Prince Abimbola’s elder brother, described the prince’s concern for the welfare of the people as innate, saying it was a trait rooted in his character.
According to him, the prince moved swiftly to address the electricity challenges facing the benefiting communities as soon as he became aware of their difficulties.
For residents of Iwesi, Ogbogbo, Latogun, Ijari and Imepe, who received the transformers with joy and appreciation, the provision of electricity infrastructure represents a potentially significant step towards addressing longstanding power supply challenges.
A more reliable electricity supply could support small businesses, artisans, traders, students and households whose daily activities depend on access to power. The initiative is therefore expected to contribute to local economic activities and improve the quality of life in the benefiting communities.
The Chairman of Ijebu North East Local Government, Hon. alongside other prominent community leaders and spiritual leaders, attended the commissioning ceremony. He described the provision of the transformers as a practical contribution to community infrastructure and an expression of concern for residents’ welfare.
He urged the benefiting communities to protect and maintain the facilities responsibly, stressing the importance of collective ownership in ensuring that the intervention delivers lasting benefits.
With heightened public interest in the Awujale succession. Some observers view the intervention as adding another dimension to conversations about the relationship between community service and traditional leadership.
The growing visibility of community-oriented initiatives by individuals associated with the succession discourse is likely to prompt further reflection on the qualities expected of anyone aspiring to occupy a position of traditional authority.
The Awujale institution carries responsibilities that extend far beyond personal aspirations. Its enduring significance rests on history, cultural identity, integrity, unity and its capacity to serve as a rallying point for Ijebu people at home and abroad.
While community development initiatives can demonstrate a commitment to public welfare, eligibility for the Awujale throne remains subject to applicable royal lineage requirements, succession customs, the relevant ruling house, and established traditional and legal procedures.
For the benefiting communities, the immediate concern remains the practical impact of the intervention in addressing the power challenges they have long faced.
For the wider Ijebu community, the development also presents an opportunity to reflect on the standards expected of individuals seeking traditional leadership, including integrity, competence, service, accountability and respect for established customs.
As the Awujale succession process unfolds, the people of Ijebuland will continue to consider the importance of heritage, character, community service and adherence to tradition in determining the future of one of the Yoruba people’s most revered traditional institutions.
While such initiatives may strengthen public confidence in an individual’s commitment to community welfare, the selection of the next Awujale will be determined through recognised traditional and legal processes.
BoldNEWS Africa will continue to monitor developments surrounding the Awujale succession and community development initiatives across Ijebuland, guided by the principle that factual reporting, public interest and accountability must remain above sentiment.
