The ancient town of Irete-Ijebu in Ogun State came alive on Saturday, October 4th, 2025, as it witnessed a grand cultural celebration marking the 4th Coronation Anniversary of His Royal Highness, Oba (Dr.) Abdul-Ganiyu Olusegun Awokoya Yesufu, the Kutmehin Adetutu I, and Onirete of Irete-Ijebu.
The momentous occasion, held at the Onirete’s Palace, attracted dignitaries, traditional rulers, political leaders, community stakeholders, and well-wishers from across the country and the diaspora. Since ascending the throne in 2021, Oba Awokoya Yesufu’s visionary leadership, dedication to preserving tradition, and commitment to the development of Irete Kingdom were reflected in the joy of the people. His reign has been characterized by a focus on community growth, youth empowerment, peacebuilding, and the promotion of cultural values.
The past four years can be described as both humbling and fulfilling, during which the community walked hand-in-hand as one people with a shared destiny. Through love, unity, and resilience, they have recorded meaningful progress.
A highlight of the celebration was the installation of prominent individuals into chieftaincy titles. Chief Mrs. Ogoji Idayat Tope was installed as the Iyalode of Irete Kingdom, one of the most revered traditional titles accorded to women in Yoruba land. The Iyalode is traditionally the voice and representative of women in the community, often serving as a leader and advocate for women’s interests. She is expected to promote women’s empowerment, community development, and youth mentorship.
Also recognized for their contributions to the growth and development of Irete Kingdom were Hon. Rafiu Olumide Adesanya, who was conferred with the title of Otunba Jadiara of Irete Kingdom, and his wife, Mrs. Afolashade Adesanya, who was installed as the Yeye Otunba Jadiara. Their installation was met with great joy and was attended by family, supporters, and well-wishers. It was hailed as a well-deserved honor for their continued dedication to public service and community upliftment.
The event was a magnificent display of Yoruba culture and royal pageantry. Traditional drummers, dancers, and cultural performers thrilled guests with colorful presentations, while the entire town of Irete-Ijebu was beautifully adorned for the occasion.
The palace and surrounding streets were filled with vibrant activity as residents and guests came out in their numbers. The presence of traditional rulers from across Ijebuland, top government officials, and members of the diaspora further elevated the celebration’s significance.
Guests were treated to an abundance of food and drinks, while musical icon King Wasiu Osupa delivered a soul-stirring live performance, blending traditional Fuji music with celebratory energy that kept the atmosphere electrified.
As the monarch begins his fifth year on the throne, the people of Irete Kingdom look forward with optimism, strengthened by the legacies already established under the reign of Oba Awokoya Yesufu.
Royal blessings were jointly offered by the Onirete and other royal fathers in attendance to the newly installed chiefs and all guests. They prayed for continued peace, prosperity, and unity in the kingdom.
The 4th Coronation Anniversary was more than a festivity; it was a reaffirmation of traditional authority, cultural heritage, and a collective vision for a better future. As new chiefs take up their roles and the Onirete’s reign enters a new chapter, the people of Irete-Ijebu remain hopeful and united under the guidance of their revered king.
