In recent months, the ancient city of Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State has witnessed a notable transformation in its security landscape, marked by a significant decline in criminal activities.
BoldNEWS Africa (Street Watch) observations indicate that residents are increasingly aware of the consequences of criminal behavior and are consciously distancing themselves from such activities. This marks a significant shift against criminally minded individuals.

This shift in security consciousness aligns with the ongoing strategic reforms initiated by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, aimed at enhancing institutional effectiveness across the nation. In Ogun State, this vision is being effectively executed under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olanrewaju Ogunlowo.
A key figure in the success of Police Area Command story is ACP Wasiu Yusuff, the Area Commander of Ijebu-Ode Police Command, whose tactical approach has been widely described as a “silent yet highly effective strategy.” His operations, though largely unpublicized, are producing visible results on the streets—bringing order and calm to communities under his jurisdiction.
BoldNEWS Africa’s on-ground observation across the command’s divisions reveals a renewed sense of professionalism, intelligence-led policing, and increased community engagement by the Nigeria Police Force in Ijebu-Ode. This has led to noticeable improvements in public order and trust.

Unlike aggressive, reactive crackdowns, the Area Command has embraced a quiet, intelligence-driven model. The strategy popularly referred to by residents as a “silent police move”, focuses on early crime detection, discreet patrols, community surveillance, and the strengthening of local intelligence networks.
It marks a paradigm shift from public showmanship to community-integrated and preventive policing.
This approach has enabled the police to prevent crimes proactively, apprehend suspects with minimal force, and maintain civil harmony without disrupting the lives of law-abiding citizens.
Moreover, the leadership style of ACP Yusuff has significantly boosted public confidence in law enforcement. The timely response to incidents, professionalism in handling disputes, and approachable policing culture have endeared the police to the local population, fostering stronger collaboration between the force and the people.
While the path to total crime eradication remains a work in progress, the current security efforts are yielding measurable success and deserve wider recognition and support. This development reinforces the belief that with commitment, discipline, and strategic planning, the safety of lives and property can be ensured silently, but effectively.
As Ijebu-Ode residents continue to enjoy the peace brought by this new policing model, there is growing hope that such strategies will be sustained and replicated across other regions in Nigeria.
