Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president Nelson Havi has raised the possibility of President William Ruto facing impeachment, following a recent ruling by the High Court that declared the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition as the majority party in the National Assembly.
In a tweet on Sunday, February 9, Havi suggested that the ruling could signal turbulent times ahead for Ruto’s presidency. He expressed concern over the Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) move to support the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, calling it “suspicious” and signaling further political unrest.
Havi warned that the situation could worsen for Ruto if former Prime Minister Raila Odinga fails to secure the Africa Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship seat in the upcoming elections scheduled for February 15. He noted that Raila’s potential loss in the AUC race would have disastrous consequences for the president.
“We told President William Ruto that the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua was a preparatory act for his eventual impeachment by ODM, but he never listened,” Havi remarked. “The coming weeks and months will be filled with uncertainty, and it will be even more calamitous if Raila Odinga loses the AU election.”
Havi’s comments suggest a deepening political rift, with Ruto’s leadership facing increasing challenges, particularly from the opposition.
