The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun-East Independent Chapel, has issued a strong caution to the general public to remain vigilant and avoid dealings with individuals posing as journalists without proper accreditation from the Union.
The Chapel emphasized that the Ogun State Council of the NUJ is currently undertaking an official registration exercise, including the issuance of identification cards to all qualified and accredited journalists operating within the Area. This initiative is part of the Union’s commitment to strengthening professionalism and ensuring that only duly recognized members represent the NUJ in the discharge of journalistic duties.
Members of the public are, therefore, advised to always verify the authenticity of any journalist’s NUJ-issued identification card before engaging with them. Any individual caught presenting a fake or unauthorized NUJ ID does so at their own risk and will face appropriate sanctions.
The Chapel further stated that all genuine and accredited members of the Ogun-East Independent Chapel have submitted their names for the official membership identification process.
It reaffirmed that journalism, as a noble profession, operates under clearly defined ethics, rules, and a guiding constitution.
According to the Chapel’s leadership, the Union is deeply concerned about the growing threat of fake news and the activities of quack journalists, which continue to undermine public trust in the media. The NUJ will not hesitate to work with relevant security and regulatory agencies to identify and prosecute impostors who tarnish the image of the profession.
