On December 17, 2024, the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, under the leadership of Chairman Comrade Akinwale Olanrewaju, inaugurated a new chapel with jurisdiction spanning the nine local government areas of Ogun East Senatorial District.
Speaking at the ceremony, Comrade Olanrewaju emphasized the strategic importance of the newly established Ogun East Independent Chapel (Ijebu-Remo). He described it as a much-needed step to promote journalism’s nobility and deliver professional media services to drive development in the region.
The NUJ State Chairman further called on the new chapel members to uphold the core values of fairness, truth, and journalistic standards. “This inauguration marks a new beginning for effective journalism that will foster societal growth and bring professional practice closer to the people of this area,” he said.
The induction of renowned public figure Dr. Gloria Laraba Shoda as the matron of the new chapel was a significant part of the event. In her acceptance speech, Dr. Shoda expressed gratitude for the recognition and urged members to adhere to the principles of honest journalism. She remarked, “Lies may be adorned in fancy, swaying garments, but truth stands naked and unwavering.”
Another key moment was the inauguration of a screening and credentials committee chaired by Comrade Abiodun Lawal. The committee will oversee the constitutional election of executives who will lead the chapel.
The guest speaker, Professor Obatunde Bright Adetola of Olabisi Onabanjo University, delivered an insightful lecture on the importance of character in journalism. He highlighted the need for practitioners to uphold ethical standards while exploring entrepreneurial opportunities in the profession.
The event was graced by heads of security agencies in the area, who commended the initiative as a new chapter for journalism in Ogun East.
